2,314 Hectares of Mangrove Forest in Surabaya Changed in Land Use

VHRmedia, Surabaya – 2,314 hectares of mangrove forest at eastern coast of Surabaya was changed in land use. Now, the green public area is occupied by 36 developers.

Communication Support of Natural Conservation Study Institute (Yapeka) VikaWisnu said that most of the mangrove land is occupied by fishpond owners and housings.

At New Order Era, city plan for eastern coast area of Surabaya was classified on ruislag area. The Surabaya City administration then established the mangrove land as a conserved area in 2006.

“Indeed, it was late. But we have to appreciate for what the Surabaya City administration had done. Moreover, now they are formulating a draft of local regulation on conservation area,” Vika Wisnu said, Tuesday (6/22).

Mangrove forest at eastern cost of Surabaya covers 2,182 hectares of Keputih area, 209 hectares of Wonorejo, 848 hectares of Medokan Ayu, and 470 hectares of Gunung Anyar Tambak. (E4)
